JOB SUMMARY:    The Safety and Health Intern under the leadership of the Manager, Learning and Organizational Development, is responsible for development, delivery and retention of various elements of the safety and health program at The Community Blood Center (CBC).

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned):

At The Community Blood Center we lead our teams while keeping our mission, vision, and values at the forefront of all we do. As part of your role you will inspire, train, and collaborate within your department and within the broader organization, with a focus on overall organizational safety. 

  1. Works collaboratively across the organization to support the organizational safety program to ensure safe, healthy, and accident-free work environment in compliance with local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations.
  2. Maintain, update and assist in the creation of safety policies, procedures and safety-related documentation.
  3. Develop and provide educational information to team members on best practices of health and safety.
  4. Support the teaching and development of CBC team members through training safety protocols, fostering awareness of secure work practices.
  5. Take part in accident investigations, offering recommendations to prevent future recurrences.
  6. Assist in keeping accurate records and documentation of safety-related activities and incidents.
  7. Conduct safety audits to evaluate program effectiveness and pinpoint areas for enhancement.
  8. Monitor and assess the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), offering guidance on proper usage and maintenance.
  9. Supports the Chemical Inventory Coordinator. In collaboration with department managers, ensures the hazardous chemical list is current and MSDS/SDS labels are current, and monitors procurement, use, storage and disposal of chemicals.
  10. Backup for the monthly inspection and flushing of the emergency eye wash stations.
  11. Complies with all policies and procedures as outlined in the CBC Team Member Handbook, CBC SOPs, or directives.
  12. Maintains a safe work environment.

 EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • Student working towards a degree in occupational health and safety, human resources or related field.
  • The ability to work as part of a team, demonstrated through involvement with student organizations, community involvement, work experience, or other activities.
  • Strong problem solving, critical thinking, judgment, and decision-making skills.
  • Strong skills using Microsoft Office programs – Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word.
  • A valid driver’s license and use of personal vehicle is required.
  • Ability to drive to the Appleton area for the duration of the position.
  • Work full-time for the duration of the position.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Interest in or previous experience in safety related employment.
  • Strong communication skills; ability to comfortably interact with and influence stakeholders.
  • Excellent time management skills to work on multiple projects and tasks.
