National Blood Donor Month

January 10, 2024

Happy National Blood Donor Month!

Since 1970, the month of January has been dedicated to blood donors across the United States as we celebrate National Blood Donor Month—a month all about celebrating volunteer blood donors and encouraging more people to give for the first time.

You might’ve heard this before – every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. This demand goes well beyond those facing an unexpected emergency like a car crash. Blood transfusions are regularly needed to treat patients facing everything from diseases like cancer to cardiovascular and orthopedic surgeries to organ and bone marrow transplants.

As important as blood is to so many of us, a small portion of the population actually donates. In fact, only three percent of eligible Americans currently donate blood, despite 65 percent of the population being eligible to do so. That’s why it’s so important to spread awareness about the need to increase and diversify our community of blood donors.

A lot has changed since President Richard Nixon first proclaimed January 1970 as National Blood Donor Month, but the need for blood—and the selflessness of those who answer the call to give it—has remained the same.

At The Community Blood Center, we remain dedicated to our mission to connect lives and share life through blood donations in our community as we look forward to growth and opportunity in the new year. We thank all those who regularly donate blood. Your decision to give generously today helps save lives and gives more people their tomorrow.
