Manager, Manufacturing Operations

JOB SUMMARY:   The Manufacturing Operations Manager plans, manages, and supervises all daily manufacturing operations, including staff, budgets, environment and work processes. Collaborates with the production planning team to manufacture products that meet the needs of the organization and customers. Oversees product manufacturing, quarantine and labeling. Ensures compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements, policies and procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned):

  • Responsible for management Manufacturing, Quarantine and Labeling functions. Ensures all functions are performed in accordance with all applicable regulatory policies and procedures and in a manner to optimize production of incoming daily raw materials.
  • Works effectively together with the cross-functional production planning team to create production and resource plans that will ensure all customer needs are met and organizational objectives are achieved. This includes effectively communicating and collaborating with intra-organizational leaders and staff.
  • Evaluates all non-conforming materials related to manufacturing operations and initiates corrective action as appropriate. Evaluates processes for trends on an on-going basis and takes appropriate action as necessary.
  • Provides leadership and development within the manufacturing department. Fosters an environment that produces highly engaged staff. Effectively communicates with team members and creates opportunities for growth and development. Adheres to all organizational policies for staff engagement, communication, feedback and development.
  • Ensures the quality of blood components produced by:
    • Ensuring equipment is calibrated, maintained, serviced, operated, and quality controlled according to manufacturer’s instructions and organizational targets
    • Ensuring policies and procedures are current and comply with regulatory requirements.
    • Ensuring supplies are adequate, within budgetary constraints and available.
    • Monitoring the effectiveness and efficiency of the department, implementing improvements as needed.
    • Identifies and resolves deviations. Tracks and trends activity to recognize and address trends. Promotes an environment of continuous process improvement.
  • Prepares annual budget for Laboratory applicable areas and reviews for monthly variances.
  • Serves as back-up for the Manager, Hospital Services as needed.
  • Serves as Radiation Safety Officer.
  • Oversees staff schedules to ensure all budgeted goals and unanticipated needs for services are met.

CLIA Job Description Requirements

  • Provides day-to-day supervision of moderate and/or high complexity test performance (as applicable) by testing personnel (as back-up)
  • Assures that all remedial actions are taken whenever test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications or SOPs.
  • Annually ensures the evaluation and documentation of competency for all laboratory personnel. Ensures that new personnel are evaluated for competency initially and at six months.
  • Maintains all section SOPs necessary to meet requirements of the FDA, AABB, and other regulatory agencies affecting the blood center operations.

EDUCATION:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a biological science
  • A minimum of 5 years laboratory experience.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Manufacturing experience required
  • Knowledge of blood center laboratory practices, equipment and/or regulations desired
  • A minimum of 3 years of supervisory or leadership experience   

SKILLS:

  • Requires strong communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Must be process-oriented with experience identifying and implementing process improvements
  • Must be self-motivating with great multi-tasking abilities.
  • Has a record of creating a highly engaging working environment
  • Maintains personal competence and expertise in current practice and future trends in laboratory methods.
  • Enjoys working in a high-paced collaborative environment
  • May occasionally be required to lift objects or materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
