Give Local, Save Global

October 23, 2022

UPDATE:

9,000 trees have been planted thanks to CBC blood donors! Thank you to everyone who donated blood during this time. You helped save lives and the planet!

Saving lives is what we do at CBC and beginning on October 23, we’re saving more than just lives – we’re working to save the planet, too! It’s all part of the Give Local, Save Global campaign.

CBC and blood centers across the nation have committed to planting 160,000 trees to help increase blood donations and make an impact on the planet. CBC is contributing 9,000 of those trees! How does it work? It’s simple! For the next few weeks, one tree will be planted in Uganda for every blood donor who presents to donate.

This is a joint effort between Blood Centers of America (BCA), America’s largest network of independent blood centers, and Forestmatic. The 160,000 units of blood donated during this campaign could help save up to 480,000 lives nationally, as one blood donation can save up to three lives.

The coolest part?! In addition to leaving your donation appointment knowing you saved lives, you also know your small act of kindness is making a positive impact on the environment. AND you even get to take a look at the tree planted thanks to your blood donation! (Told you it was cool!)

So, you presented to donate – are you ready to see your tree now?!

Presenting donors will receive a card at their appointment with their tree ID included.

Because of your blood donation, one more tree has been planted. Thank you for helping save lives and the planet!

This project is estimated to contribute to sequestering nearly 10,128 metric tons of equivalent carbon dioxide over the next five years. To compare, this is equivalent to more than 25 million miles driven by an average gasoline-powered passenger vehicle, powering 1,971 homes for a year, or charging 1.2 billion smartphones. In addition to the environmental impact, it also creates job opportunities. For the 160,000 trees planted, each farmer will plant around 500. This impacts nearly 320 households, representing about 1,600 people. 60% of the farmers are women, and 8 youth will be employed, full-time, with an additional 20 youth operating the nurseries—all previously unemployed.
