High school lifesavers

November 1, 2021

While studying for that upcoming biology test or finishing the latest pre-calc assignment, local high school students could also be helping a patient through their medical journey by ensuring blood is available for transfusion. And it only takes about an hour to do this – a perfect study break to save lives and recharge before getting back to the books!

At just 17-years-old, or 16-years-old with parental permission, students can start donating blood and saving lives. The Gallon Grad program provides a special opportunity to celebrate high school blood donors.

The Gallon Grad program is the first-step in creating a life-long passion for blood donation. It’s also a chance for us to highlight the students who play a critical role in supporting the community. It’s all about saving lives and helping others understand the importance of blood donation.

There are so many different ways to get involved! The program is available to students at CBC partner high schools. Students must complete two of the following requirements over the course of their high school career:

  • Donate blood at least 3 times
  • Volunteer for a minimum of five hours
  • Recruit a minimum of five new donors

Students are able to fulfill the donate or recruit requirement twice.

Students can also host a blood drive to earn Gallon Grad status.
