Convalescent plasma: be a part of the COVID-19 solution

April 22, 2020

As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, our community is finding ways to support one another. It’s really pretty incredible. All around us, people are stepping up. It’s what we do to support our community. When every small act of kindness adds up, it makes an enormous impact.

There’s another way to help during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and have made a full recovery can donate their plasma to help others facing the coronavirus. This is called convalescent plasma. After recovery from the infection, the individual’s plasma develops antibodies that can fight against it. That means, the plasma from recovered COVID-19 patients can potentially be used to treat patients with severe cases of COVID-19.

Those who have recovered from the coronavirus know first hand how terrible it can be. This is why the opportunity to help someone else going through what you just overcame is truly remarkable.

The process for donating convalescent plasma is similar to donating blood. It takes about an hour (and you still get cookies afterward). This plasma is then transfused to a patient with a severe case of COVID-19, who is relying on you for their potential treatment. The benefit to someone facing the effects of COVID-19 are impossible to overstate.

Are you a recovered COVID-19 patient who is interested in donating convalescent plasma?

Is there anything else to know about blood donation during the COVID-19 pandemic?

  • Yes. During this uncertain time, blood donation remains an essential service to our public health, and CBC has taken great measures to ensure that blood donors remain safe while donating. More information about blood donation, including the safety measures in place, can be found here.

Thank you for supporting our community, connecting lives and sharing life.
